Goodbye Bad Habits

We all have habits, good and bad. Some habits can enhance our lives and bring us joy, while others can hold us back and make us unhappy. If you have identified certain habits that are negatively impacting your life, it's time to let go of them.

Before you can effectively break a bad habit, it's important to understand why you engage in it. Are you feeling bored, frustrated, anxious, sad, or depressed? Do certain events or situations trigger your bad habits? By reflecting on these questions, you can gain insight into the underlying causes of your habits.  What is one bad habit that you have related to work?  Many of you have shared eating candy while doing paperwork, or not drinking enough water.

Take a moment to consider specific instances when your bad habits arise. Do you find yourself overeating while grading? Working straight through rather than connecting with coworkers, deleting emails rather than lesson planning…  Do you bite your nails when you're nervous or anxious? By pinpointing the circumstances that lead to your habits, you can begin to develop strategies to overcome them.

Start by writing your bad habits on paper. This simple act can bring clarity and help you take ownership of your journey towards change. With a clear understanding of the habits you want to eliminate, you can then devise strategies to combat them.  Ex.  Eating candy when bored can turn into an opportunity to walk to a friend’s classroom, connect quickly, then return to the task.  By doing so, you avoid the sugar, create a new habit, get steps in, and connect.  You will feel SO MUCH BETTER!!!

The strategies for breaking habits will vary depending on the specific habit you are trying to change. For example, you didn’t get enough sleep, didn’t pack a healthy lunch and you find yourself snacking more… Additionally, identifying triggers that contribute to your bad habits can empower you to avoid or minimize those triggers, making it easier to quit cold turkey.

It's important to acknowledge that breaking bad habits is not an easy task. Old habits are deeply ingrained and can be difficult to overcome. Setbacks may occur along the way, but remember that each setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Stay persistent and committed to your goal of saying goodbye to these negative forces in your life.

By understanding the underlying causes of your bad habits, developing strategies to combat them, and staying resilient in the face of setbacks, you can successfully say goodbye to your bad habits and pave the way for personal growth and self-improvement.
