Your Money Has a Pattern: Discover What Yours Reveals
Once you start paying attention to your spending patterns, something interesting happens. You begin to notice that certain purchases feel energizing while others feel unnecessary.
That’s where the concept of Money Dials, introduced by Ramit Sethi, becomes helpful. Each of us tends to have one or two areas where we naturally love spending money.
These are the places where spending feels meaningful, fulfilling, and worthwhile.
Convenience
Spending money to simplify life. I talked a lot about that last time. This is an area where I was able to find a lot of extra money to reallocate elsewhere, but at an earlier stage of life, this was far more necessary than it is now.
Food delivery, cleaning services, automation tools, rideshares, or anything that saves time and reduces stress.
Travel
For some people, travel is a core life experience.
They prioritize trips, new cultures, and adventures over other purchases. I have a friend who lives overseas and travels from country to country, because it is cheaper than the cost of staying put in the most desirable parts of the US.
Health and Fitness
This dial focuses on investing in physical wellbeing.
Gym memberships, trainers, nutrition programs, wellness retreats, massage and high-quality health resources.
Experiences
People with this dial value memories over possessions.
Concerts, events, adventures, special dinners, or once-in-a-lifetime activities.
Freedom
Freedom-focused spenders prioritize flexibility.
They want the ability to work less, explore interests, or make life decisions without financial stress. I have a close loved one who spent 2 different chunks of extended time traveling the country and Canada, living in a convergence van, living life and not feeling the grind of work.
Relationships
For some people, money is a tool for connection.
Hosting gatherings, traveling with family, celebrating milestones, and creating meaningful shared moments. This was an are that I was able to find extra money, but not let go of the intention to spend time with family and friends, I just tweaked the spending when it came to hosting events.
Generosity
Giving back brings joy to these individuals.
Donations, gifts, supporting loved ones, or contributing to causes they care about.
Luxury
Luxury is about enjoying high-quality experiences and products.
Beautiful craftsmanship, premium materials, or things that simply feel special.
Social Status
For some, spending reflects identity and recognition.
Clothing, brands, or memberships that signal accomplishment or belonging.
Self-Improvement
One of my personal favorites.
Courses, books, coaching, learning experiences, and skill development.
People with this dial believe the best investment is the one you make in yourself.
The Key Insight
Most people don’t have all ten Money Dials turned up. We usually have one or two that really matter. The real magic happens when you stop trying to spend evenly across everything and instead choose to invest more intentionally in the areas that bring you the most fulfillment.
Reflection
Write down the three areas where you spend the most money outside of basic living expenses.
Then ask yourself:
Do these reflect the life I want to create?
If not, where would you rather invest?
